Career and University Counselling

Year 9

In Year 9, study and career guidance is linked to politics lessons. With the help of special self-exploration programs, students have the opportunity to identify their own areas of interest, strengths and suitable occupations/career fields. They can gather initial ideas for their future careers or consolidate certain wishes or vague ideas with the help of these special search programs and databases. In grades 9 and 10, the writing of letters of application and the creation of a resume are integrated into the English and German lessons in preparation for the internship.

The end of the school year also marks the beginning of the time when parents and students can start thinking about possible universities and courses of study. If your child is interested in studying at a British university, you will certainly find the site created by the UK Universities Admission Service (UCAS) very helpful. Click on the link to the UCAS widget page here for comprehensive information about studying at UK universities and the admissions process.

Year 10

In Year 10 there is a compulsory one to two week work placement. Here, the students have the opportunity to gain experience in a profession they are interested in and to get an insight into everyday working life; Europe-wide internships open up further interesting perspectives. The impressions gained are recorded and processed in an internship portfolio, which is prepared and graded in German class. In addition to gaining specialist knowledge and becoming acquainted with a specific job description, the internship focuses on the independent selection of a company and the application process. In this way, personal responsibility and independence are strengthened. Successful participation is noted in the report card and also certified. Ms Staudenmeyer is responsible for the organization and supervision of the internship.

Years 11 and 12

Every year, the German School London invites a career counselor from the Federal Employment Agency. The counselor holds two information sessions: a general introduction to career choices for grades 9 and 10, and a study counseling session for grades 11 and 12. In addition, students have the opportunity to obtain individual information about various careers and courses of study during a free counseling session.

This offer is supplemented by contacts with German universities, for example, through the DSL's cooperation agreement with the leading technical universities in Germany: RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, TU Braunschweig, TU Darmstadt, TU Dresden, Leibniz Universität Hannover, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, TU Munich, University of Stuttgart, among others, which have received awards in the Excellence Initiative of the Federal Republic of Germany. The contact person for students interested in studying at an English university is Mr. Wingate.

The graduates of previous years - the ALUMNI - often maintain contact with the DSL in order, among other things, to pass on their good experiences at English universities to the DSL student body and parents. In this way, they complement the study and career counseling by providing "first-hand" information.
All students have access to information materials on education and study in Germany and abroad in the Learning Resources Center.

On the way to University
